All of the usual caveats apply -- wear safety glasses, keep a bucket of sand handy, don't tell mom, etc.

Accessing scientific data and videos on a cell phone

The time when an entire technical and scientific multilingual and multimedia library can be worn on your hip is fast approaching.

Here for example is Epocrates, a medical services company supplying pharmaceutical data over the Apple iPhone, a "smart" cellphone --

Their cellphone-web-linked SQL database and C++ data-access classes provide information about pill appearance, usage, effects, and drug interactions.

Here are some CNET articles on the newly released Apple iPhone SDK, expected to trigger an explosion of useful cellphone apps --

Interested in viewing SciVee videos on your iPhone while on the go? Also interested in integrating your SciVee videos with behind-the-scenes database information viewable on a smart cellphone? Good news -- the technology is now available, at least in the Mac-plus-iPhone world.

Just a few minutes ago (10am-noon Thursday 06-Mar-2008 California time) Apple announced the release of the iPhone software development kit and provided a demonstration of some sample iPhone programs developed with this SDK, including some medical software --

Macintosh aficionados will be happy to hear that iPhone software can be developed using the standard Xcode IDE, plus a new virtual-iPhone test environment that emulates an iPhone on the software developer's Macintosh. The new SDK/API includes support for touchpad gestures like finger-flicking, plus support for...

Aha! There is a way to view a list of existing communities

I just discovered from the top level that the More button on the Featured Communities pane does provide a list of existing communities. This was not obvious once past the Home Page, but at least it is a useful list. Perhaps add this info to the FAQ?

SciVee community list in the user interface

Perhaps the user interface could be modified to provide a list of existing communities whenever the user chooses to either join a community or create a new community. This list of existing communities should include a short description and possibly a list of members.

As of this writing (15-Feb-2008) the only way I can get a list of existing communities is to enter the search keyword "community" into the search field at the top of the user interface screen. [Actually, there is a second way -- see the next blog entry.]
