Movie Maker Tutorial: Creating your video

  • Open Movie Maker; you should see a screen like the one shown in the screenshot here.

Note the viewer and its controls on the right, the clip library in the middle, and the timeline at the bottom. We will refer to these throughout the tutorial.
  • On the left side of the screen, you’ll see a list of Movie Tasks. Under Capture Video, click “Capture from video device”
  • You will then be asked to select a Video Capture Device and the available devices will appear as choices. Choose the one you want to use.
  • Select your audio device and input source. These will likely already be set if you are using a webcam with a built-in microphone.
  • Click “Configure…”, then “Video Settings”. We recommend choosing a frame rate of 30 and an output size of 640x480.

Click “Ok”, then close the configuration window and click “Next”

    • If you have installed Windows Media Encoder 9 Series, you can create a custom profile for SciVee. It is a free download from Microsoft. Once you have installed this software, open Windows Media Profile Editor
    • Give your new profile a name (like “SciVee”).
    • Select “Audio” and “Video” and set them to either CBR or one of the VBR options and choose the “Windows Media Audio 9” codec
    • Add a target bitrate of 1 Megabit
    • On the 1000Kbps tab, set the video size to 480 x 360 and make sure the frame rate os 29.97 fps
    • Click “Save and Close” and navigate to the Movie Maker folder (probably under “Program Files”) and save your new profile in “Movie Maker/Shared/Profiles/”. This will allow Movie Maker to see your profile when you make a new video.
  • Instead of clicking the “Configure…” menu in Movie Maker, click “Next” until you come to the “Video Setting” page. Select “Other settings”, click the drop-down menu, and select the custom profile you just made. Then click “Next”.

  • Give your captured video a name and save it; click “Next”
  • You will now see what your camera is seeing in the Viewer.
  • When you are ready to start your video, click “Start Capture” to begin recording
  • When you are done, click “Stop Capture” to stop recording; then click “Finish”
  • You will see the video you just made appear as a clip in the Clip Library
