Annabelle Rodd, a student from the Epigenomic Medicine Laboratory, Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute discusses the principles of DNA-targeted phototherapy. The presentation provides a historical perspective of the use of phototherapy using plant extracts and solar radiation for the treatment of skin conditions such vitiligo. Modern phototherapy using chemical compounds (psoralens) and ultraviolet light (UVA) for the treatment of psoriasis and cutaneous T-cell lymphoma is also considered. The focus of the presentation is on the use and methods for evaluation of the efficacy of extremely effective DNA minor groove binding ligands with UVA, for potential clinical applications.
