Staphylococcus aureus phenotype switching: an effective bacterial strategy to escape host immune response and establish a chronic infection

submitted by: Ben_Norman
Staphylococcus aureus is a frequent cause for serious, chronic and therapy-refractive infections in spite of susceptibility to antibiotics in vitro. In chronic infections, altered bacterial phenotypes, such as small colony variants (SCVs), have been found. Yet, it is largely unclear whether the ability to interconvert from the wild-type to the SCV phenotype is only a rare clinical and/or just laboratory phenomenon or is essential to sustain an infection. Here, we performed different...

European Research for diabetes patients

submitted by: COMED2010

The prevalences of obesity, Type 2 diabetes and the metablic syndrome are rising rapidly both in Europe and worldwide. There is evidence that this is due to the population taking less exercise and becoming more sedentary, coupled with the increased consumption of high fat, low fibre foods (fast food or convenience food). The EXGENESIS consortium aims to provide insights into the reasons why poor diet and lack of exercise contribute to increasing levels of obesity and diabetes.

Progress and Promise in Parkinson's

submitted by: CIRMTV

Parkinson's disease is a neurodegenerative disease that affects nearly a million people in the U.S. No cure exists and current medications become less effective over time. This video provides a patient's perspective of living with Parkinson's and a scientist's efforts to better understand the disease using novel stem cell research strategies.

Progress and Promise in Huntington's

submitted by: CIRMTV

Huntington's disease (HD) is a genetic neurodegenerative disorder that typically strikes in a person's thirties and leads to death 10-15 years later. Through firsthand stories, this video describes the devastating impact of the disease on families, the inspirational power of patient advocacy, and the promise of stem cell research to find a cure.

Genetically Programmable Pathogen Sense and Destroy

submitted by: saurabh gupta

The video describes my invention of Engineered cells which can act as a live vaccine. These cells are programmed to intelligently detect a particular gut pathogen and then specifically and completely kill it without affecting the normal gut microbial flora. This automated approach thus prevents from horrible side effects of current antibiotics and growing resistance against them.
