Using Drupal drush and features to deploy a drupal-based metadata editor

submitted by: LTER_NetworkOffice_is
How to deploy a Drupal based metadata editor from scratch in about 10 minutes. The process can be faster and slower, but here we use the Drupal Shell (drush) and the features Drupal module to expedite the process of installing the application from scratch. It assumes that you have full access to the deployment server, you know some shell commands, and that you have a LAMP/WAMP distro. It also assumes that you are a bit familiar on how to use Drupal, what are modules, etc. The resulting...

The No Dead Ends Website (LTER ASM 09) Part 2

Getting Started with Ecological Metadata Language - Using Morpho

submitted by: LTER_NetworkOffice_is
You want to create a metadata record that describes your Ecological Data set. You want this metadata document to be standardized for easy sharing - and you thought that you would use the Ecological Metadata Language (EML). One way to create EML records is using Morpho. Morphos is free, download it from the "ecoinformatics.org" site and use this video-tutorial to see how you can use Morpho.

Getting started with the Ecological Metadata Language

This short clip shows you how to use Ecological Metadata Language to document your ecological data. Specifically, it tells you how to download EML, what tools can you use to edit/enter EML metadata, and as an example, it shows how you would use oXygen to create a simple EML document, that is, a metadata record with very basic info such as a title, an abstract, contact info for the organization owning the data set and the point of contact information.

Importing an EML document into the Morpho editor

submitted by: LTER_NetworkOffice_is
the Morpho ecological metadata editor does not recognize EML documents that are not created using Morpho. Here is a trick to make Morpho recognize EML documents that are created or edited outside Morpho: You need to place the document under the folder where Morpho keeps locally its EML documents, and you need to name your EML using a filename composed of two integers sepated by a dot

Inserting an EML-taxonomy fragment into another EML document

This 2 min 40 secs clip shows how to insert an EML fragment containing taxonomy-related information into another EML document

Converting List of Taxa from ITIS to the Ecological Metadata Language

submitted by: LTER_NetworkOffice_is
Given a list of taxa names, create an Ecological Metadata Language (EML) compliant taxonomic classification that can be embedded in an EML metadata record. We use ITIS to create an SGML- fgdc/bdp compliant fragment, which can be converted directly into an EML fragment. To do so, you can replace the BDP tags by the EML counterparts, using any editor with a Find&Replace function, or using the Perl script provided as attached materials. These are the string replacements needed BDP...

Should Genomics Contextual Data Fly Coach?

submitted by: dougramsey
Inigo San Gil, University of New Mexico The Long Term Ecological Research Network (LTER) creates long-term ecological data records in twenty six sites across the US. Five years ago the LTER adopted a metadata specification called the Ecological Metadata Language (EML) to facilitate network data integration and synthesis. A growing number of LTER scientists are conducting genomics research, thus the need to adopt an integrated genomics and ecological data management system is urgent. Recently,...
