An interconnected, efficient, and expansive metropolitan rail system is a long-term goal for many urban areas and has become a fixed component of many metropolitan regional plans. This study aims to uncover the leading factors contributing to the success of transit-oriented development; specifically, what motivates residents to use the San Diego County Trolley. As the nature and availability of resources to maintain and develop the urban environment changes, the way city planners and citizens think and live must adjust.

Promoting sustainable transportation options: Bicycle Master Planning at UC San Diego

Senior Project focused on bicycle planning on university campuses. Three case studies focused on UC Davis, UC Berkeley and UC San Diego and their bicycle plans. The data collected helped determine the needs of the different campuses and the reasons for their bicycle plans and how they affected sustainability. Research was conducted through surveys, interviews, direct observations and review of scholarly literature. Findings include a need for an updated Bicycle Master Plan at UC San Diego and that bicycling needs to be promoted and sustained as an alternative to the automobile

That is to say that that the sole focus of Southern California's transportation planning is to develop transportation infrastructures such as widening freeways or building more freeways to improve the regional transportation mobility and as well as planning residential zones horizontally so that citizens have to drive a long distance before they can get to their workplace.
