Functional health literacy (FHL) is defined as the ability to read, understand, and act on health information.1 The Institute of Medicine estimates that nearly half of all American adults lack these crucial skills, which prevent them from functioning effectively and safely in today’s complex healthcare system.2

Previous studies have shown that patients with low FHL are less likely to comprehend written patient education materials on their chronic disease state and are more likely to misunderstand prescription drug labels and prescription warning labels.
