SciVee stats for embedded videos? -- Discussions http://www.scivee.tv/node/4988/talks/316 Hi there, I really like SciVee and we're getting some great use out of it. We have put a number of videos on here and popped the embedded code into the Rat Genome Database (http://rgd.mcw.edu) on the home page and elsewhere for our site's users to see. What I am wrestling with at the moment is how to best measure usage and views so we can demonstrate its utility for grants, etc. Its great to get the number of views for each video, this is usually a really nice number that looks good in presentations we give to people about how we're using SciVee. I believe this only measures when the movie has been played (or started playing and not necessarily watched all the way) on the SciVee.tv site. I don't think it gives us a way to track the views/plays of our embedded movies. Consequently we're getting lower 'viewership' numbers as a result of being unable to count these views from outside SciVee. Similarly, SciVee is probably understating its viewership and if we could figure out how to add in these extra view statistics then everyone will win. :) I'm starting to experiment with duplicating some content over to Viddler and Vimeo because I can get embedded viewer stats when I embed movies hosted at these sites into pages on our site. There is some merit to spreading the movies to other sites as it increases their chance of being seen, etc. That being said, its a pain to have to duplicate the work and for our professional use I'd far rather keep SciVee on our home page than use a generic video hosting site. It would be really cool if Scivee could count these embedded views too, then we could keep everything in once place - Im guessing the info needed is in the log files somewhere. Any chance we might see this feature added? Cheers! Simon. Re: SciVee stats for embedded videos? http://www.scivee.tv/node/4988/talks/316#m328 Hi Tim, I thought it had to go at the end too - we're getting stats so presumably it is working but I'll ask our developers for their opinion... Checking twice I see it a few s up. I always thought that the script had to go directly before the closing . So...it works where it is. Right? You wanted a question answered and instead I now have a question for you. The beauty of the web. Thanks, Tim Aug 27, 2008 http://www.scivee.tv/node/4988/talks/316#m326 Re: SciVee stats for embedded videos? http://www.scivee.tv/node/4988/talks/316#m324 Hi Tim, Thanks for the suggestion. Assuming I understand you correctly you are suggesting using the web page stats (from apache log files or similar) as a way to measure the interest in the video? Right now we have the usual google analytics and similar things tracking our web pages where the videos are placed but the current pages aren't 'devoted' to the videos (eg the home page http://rgd.mcw.edu or cunningly hidden at the bottom of our disease portals page (http://rgd.mcw.edu/wg/portals/) . Consequently the stats for the page itself tell me how many people passed by that page for whatever reason but dont really equate directly to the video content on the page. I thought about having a static image of the video that when clicked loaded up the scivee player, its a bit of a kludge but we could track the clicks on the image and equate these to a desire to watch the video and hence get a count that way. I'm guessing that the embedded flash player passes the video ID to the scivee servers via HTTP which then stream it back out on request and that this request is probably captured in the weblogs. One could then scape the web logs grabbing the ID of the video out of the request URL and counting number of requests (and the URLs of the web pages they came from) and that would provide your embedded stats and also a link out to the sites where the various scivee videos were being hosted. Vimeo has stats along these lines and a list of the URLs that they came from. I should have a look to see how some similar embedded players that I use grab files from my own servers to see if this is really how it happens. :) Simon. One workaround (for now) would be to track the page using a tracking package. There are plenty of free services available. This would also allow you to say in your grant application that so-an-so is my biggest user by views/pages. Granted this does not prove that the user viewed the video but as many unfortunately say, bad data is better than no data. We can't offer any quick fixes right now, but we recognize that this is an important feature and will try to integrate it into the site. We are so glad SciVee is working well for you in other ways.
