Biodiversity Virtual e-Laboratory (BioVeL)

BioVeL satellite meeting held at The Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology, Bremen, Germany, September 27, 2011 ( Biodiversity Virtual e-Laboratory (BioVeL) brings together scientists and service providers with the aim to define web services for the the integration of (meta)genomics data into cross-disciplinary analysis of biodiversity data. BioVeL meets the needs of Europe’s Biodiversity Science research community with tools for pipelining data and analysis into efficient workflows, urgently needed to understand biodiversity in a rapidly changing environment. BioVeL customises, deploys and supports the Taverna / myExperiment / BioCatalogue family of software to achieve this. In this satellite meeting we bring together a group of experts in metagenomics web services and scientific users. We wish to organise an interdisciplinary approach to conduct biodiversity research by integrating metagenomics information with other traditional sectors in biodiversity science (e.g. species distribution data, ecological monitoring). We seek collaboration with the international community in order to integrate existing web services from your field for generating novel analytical tools that utilize data from metagenomics, ecology, and taxonomy among others. BioVeL will focus on the design of analytical workflows that address scientific topics such as invasive species management, carbon flux, and ecosystem services.
