Marine ecosystems provide numerous ecosystem goods and services (EGS) beneficial for the global human population. Yet, they are highly threatened, facing resource depletion and ecological impacts from anthropogenic activities over the past century. The European Union introduced the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) to promote the sustainable use of marine EGS. The MSFD approach acknowledges the health and wellbeing benefits that EGS provides for the human population by recognises the three-dimension concept of sustainable development: environmental protection, economic growth, and social development. The Options for Delivering Ecosystem-Based Marine Management (ODEMM) project aims to develop a framework to support the sustainable use of European seas. Linkages will describe the interactions between environmental, socio-cultural and economic components, using risk assessment, cost benefit analysis and stakeholder engagement to weigh up different management options. This will provide policy makers, managers and practitioners with the necessary information to support sustainable use of marine ecosystems.
