This video highlights some of the main topics of my Senior Research Project regarding the sustainability of CSAs in San Diego County. I argue that CSAs should begin accepting food stamps for membership payment as a way of increasing accessibility. If local CSAs were able [and willing] to accept SNAP payments, the benefit of the federal subsidy would be fourfold: (1) it could provide those living in poverty with healthy food, (2) support local farmers with having more shares of their farm sold to community members, and (3) free up recipient’s income that would have been spent on food to be invested in other parts of the economy, which would lead to (4) an increase in sales tax revenue for the state.
