This study focuses on the development of public spaces within the city of San Francisco. Current research suggests that public space is one of contention, often spurring a great amount of discussion between public and private interests (Goheen 1998, 479). The study asks how each space is evaluated by using a fixed set of criteria. The objective of this study is threefold: (1) identify and examine privately owned public space versus publicly owned public space within the city of San Francisco, (2) critically assess the criteria used to determine the success of such spaces, and (3) use results within the context of a senior thesis. The project includes a comparative case study approach, direct observation, and archival analysis. The case studies focus on different approaches the city has taken in order to increase the amount of public space, and shed light on how these spaces are used in addition to their accessibility. Through direct observation, I was able to first hand experience these spaces. Incentive building and its history were be taken into account. The study’s main goal is to examine different types of public space and will add to the current academic discourse regarding the need for public space.
