As the world continues to develop and resources continually become scarce, alternatives to sustain the American way of life have become more important than ever. The American transportation system has become increasingly dependent on one mode of transportation, the personal automobile. Throughout the 20th century the American transit system of the postwar boom developed in favor of the automobile, especially in the sprawling cities of the west coast, like San Diego. The developed transportation system of the United States needs to look for new answers within transportation planning that is sustainable and efficient. The San Diego region has a multitude of transportation planning that is sustainable and efficient. San Diego incorporates light rail, bus, and automobiles into the city’s transit system. This paper deals with the idea of creating a system that can be both efficient and sustainable. By using various cities and models that have created efficient and sustainable transportation systems, this paper aims to incorporate these models into the San Diego region. Data from this paper can in turn to be used by other regions and cities to help promote efficient and sustainable planning. The reach in the paper will provide additional value in the field of transportation planning because it will provide characteristics necessary to produce a successful transportation system that is efficient and sustainable.
