Adam Sawatsky, MD, Chief Medical Resident, Mayo Clinic in Arizona, discusses his article entitled “Eight Years of the Mayo International Health Program: What an International Elective Adds to Resident Education” (available at: http://tinyurl.com/24ewwd9), published in the August 2010 issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings. Dr. Sawatsky describes the professional and personal benefits that participation in the MIHP program afforded to the 162 Mayo residents who have thus far elected for an international elective, as well as some of the challenges faced, and argues for the importance of such electives in residency programs.
