The purpose of this study is to evaluate the changing importance of bicycle planning at the University of California, San Diego in response to the growing emphasis on sustainable development and reduction of carbon emissions. This paper identifies physical planning efforts to establish a safe, accessible and efficient bicycle network to decrease reliance on automobiles. In addition, this research explores the barriers to riding a bike at UCSD. It will demonstrate both the perceived and actual barriers associated with bicycling and suggest opportunities to make this method of commute more accessible and appealing for students and staff at the university.
