The San Diego Pharmacist Resource and Research Network is conducting a study to discover the best pharmacists/pharmacy practices in San Diego. Network members were asked to nominate pharmacists for their innovative practice. These pharmacists were interviewed by UCSD students. A short video footage of each pharmacist interview is now posted via the network’s virtual community hosted on the SciVee website. Along with this video you will find a brief description about their innovative practice. Web links to these videos is also available via the Network’s website (http://sdpharmacist.ucsd.edu).
The UCSD's Moores Cancer Center (MCC) Retail Pharmacy specializes in outpatient prescription filling services for patients, counseling services, and specialty insurance billing. Most of our customers are patients at MCC and have received or are receiving intravenous chemotherapy, oral chemotherapy, radiation, surgery, or blood and marrow transplants. The pharmacists are responsible for reviewing oral chemotherapy prescriptions, reviewing patient profiles, preparing oral chemotherapy, and counseling patients on their medications. We have created an Oral Chemotherapy Monitoring and Counseling Guide to help us gather chemotherapy-specific laboratory monitoring parameters, dosage limits, and patient counseling points. The pharmacists have the opportunity to work with other healthcare providers in the Cancer Center, such as oncologists, infusion pharmacists, nurses, nurse practioners, physician assistants, and physicians.
