WE'VE HAD MANY EXCELLENT VIDEOS SUBMITTED TO THE WORLD CHANGING IDEAS CONTEST. HOWEVER, WE HAVE NOT HAD A SUFFICIENT NUMBER OF ENTRIES TO ALLOW US TO FAIRLY CHOOSE A WINNER AND RUNNERS-UP IN EACH OF THE FIVE VIDEO CATEGORIES, NOR HAVE WE HAD A SUFFICIENT NUMBER OF PEOPLE'S CHOICE VOTES TO CHOOSE A PEOPLE'S CHOICE WINNER. Scientific American is in search of science visionaries looking to build a cleaner, healthier, & safer future. For a chance to be published in an issue of Scientific American magazine & our website, record a 2-5 minute video of your world changing idea. Scientific American is pleased to announce The World Changing Ideas Video contest, in partnership with SciVee. The contest is open to video entries about innovative ways to build a cleaner, healthier, safer world. The ideas represent a simple yet powerful vision of a better future. Some ideas may be in use now; others are emerging from the lab. For examples of World Changing Ideas, see “World Changing Ideas,” Scientific American; December 2009 - http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=world-changing-ideas. We are seeking non-commercial videos of 2 - 5 minutes in the following categories:
  • Energy
  • Transportation
  • Environment
  • Electronics or Robotics
  • Healthcare or Medicine
Scientific American will judge the entries (and ask our readers to pick their favorites in each category), and announce the winners in early October, 2010. Videos will be judged on overall impact, scientific content, concept/originality, entertainment value, and production quality. Winning entries will be recognized, featured and promoted on the Scientific American web site. Viewer's Choice Award. There will also be a viewer's choice award in each category. To vote for your choice go to the category by clicking the link to the right. Make sure you are logged into the SciVee site and then view the videos. Click the star rating you prefer under each video that you review. A “Thank You for Voting” notice will appear and your vote will be recorded toward the total for the Viewer's Choice award. You may only vote once for each video. Here’s how to upload your video: 1. Go to /uploadvideo and login to Scivee or register if you're not already a user. 2. Follow the video upload process:
  • Mark your entry as a "video only."
  • Give your video a title, a short description, and list the authors
  • Choose the appropriate audience and subject areas.
3. When asked to enter tags, make sure you put WCI-Energy, WCI-Transportation, WCI-Environment, WCI-Electronics, or WCI-Healthcare to submit your entry to the appropriate category. You can submit only one video per category. Each video may be entered in only one category. 4. Click finish and you'll be automatically entered into the contest. It's that easy! Sponsor reserves the right to cancel or modify this Promotion in the event that an insufficient number of entries are received that meet the minimum judging criteria. By submitting an original video, entrant represents and warrants that the video is entrant’s own creation and is 100% original work; is not subject to, and does not infringe upon, the rights of any third parties, including without limitation privacy or publicity rights; and is not defamatory, obscene or otherwise illegal. The entrant further represents and warrants that any person whose image is identifiable in the entered video has signed a release or permission sufficient to enable the entrant to grant Sponsor the rights in the video granted in these Official Rules. Entrant will furnish Sponsor a copy of such release or permission upon request; failure to do so by a winning entrant may result in disqualification and selection of another winner in his/her place. Entrants not complying with these requirements will be subject to disqualification. All entrants must have a valid email address. In case of dispute as to identity of entrant, entry will be declared made by the authorized account holder of the email address submitted at time of entry. "Authorized Account Holder" is defined as the natural person who is assigned an email address by an Internet access provider, online service provider, or other organization (e.g., business, educational, institution, etc.) responsible for assigning email addresses or the domain associated with the submitted email address. Any other attempted form of entry is prohibited; no automatic, programmed; robotic or similar means of entry are permitted. Sponsor, and its parent companies, subsidiaries, affiliates, partners and promotion and advertising agencies are not responsible for technical, hardware, software, telephone or other communications malfunctions, errors or failures of any kind, lost or unavailable network connections, website, Internet, or ISP unavailability, unauthorized human intervention, traffic congestion, incomplete or inaccurate capture of entry information (regardless of cause) or failed, incomplete, garbled, jumbled or delayed computer transmissions which may limit one's ability to enter this Promotion, including any injury or damage to participant's or any other person's computer relating to or resulting from participating in this Promotion or downloading any materials in this Promotion. All entries become the sole property of the Sponsor and receipt of entries will not be acknowledged or returned. 3. JUDGING/WINNER: All entries will be viewed and judged by Sponsor on or about October 15, 2010. Prize winners will be selected on the basis of how well they have the impact they have shown to make the world a better place, scientific content, concept/originality, entertainment value, and production quality. Potential winner will be notified by e-mail on or about October 1, 2010, and may be required to execute and return an Affidavit of Eligibility/Release/Prize Acceptance Form within fourteen (14) days of attempted notification. Each participant selected as a potential winner must comply with all terms and conditions set forth in these Official Rules, and winning is contingent upon fulfilling all such requirements. If the winner cannot be contacted within [7] calendar days of first notification attempt, if prize or prize notification is returned as undeliverable, if winner rejects his/her prize or in the event of noncompliance with these Promotion Official Rules, such prize will be forfeited and an alternate winner will be selected from all remaining eligible entries. Upon prize forfeiture, no compensation will be given. JUDGES’ DECISIONS ARE FINAL ON ALL MATTERS. 4. WINNING ENTRIES: There will be one winner and two runners up in each category selected by the judges. In addition, there will be a Viewers' Choice vote in each category for a favorite video. There will be no award or prize other than recognition by the judges and/or readers and the posting of the video(s) online. 5. RIGHTS IN ENTRIES: By submitting an original video and entering the Promotion, entrant grants Sponsor and SciVee the right in perpetuity to publish, use, edit, adapt and/or modify his/her original video in any way for any and all purposes, including but not limited to advertisements, publicity and/or marketing in any and all media worldwide without further compensation to or permission from entrant (except where prohibited), and with or without credit to entrant, at Sponsor’s or SciVee's sole discretion. Entrant understands and agrees that by submitting a video through www.scivee.tv, entrant is also agreeing to use of his/her video by SciVee, Inc. in accordance the Terms of Use posted to that website. 6. GENERAL: Acceptance of a prize constitutes permission by winner to use of his/her name, photograph and/or likeness for advertising, publicity and promotion purposes without compensation (unless prohibited by law). Sponsor is not responsible for incomplete, late, lost, stolen, damaged, mutilated, illegible, postage-due or misdirected entries or mail. By participating in this Promotion, entrants agree to be bound by these Official Rules and agree to release and hold harmless Sponsor and its parent companies, subsidiaries, affiliates, advertising and promotions agencies, partners, representatives, agents, successors, assigns, employees, officers and directors, from any and all liability, for loss, harm, damage, injury, cost or expense whatsoever including without limitation, property damage, personal injury and/or death which may occur in connection with, preparation for, or participation in Promotion, or participation in any Promotion-related activity and for any claims based on publicity rights, defamation or invasion of privacy.
