Three Prestigious Journals Inaugurate SciVee Commercial Service

Synchronized Video Complements On-line Articles

(San Diego) – November 9, 2009 - SciVee (www.scivee.tv ), an internet science site promoting knowledge discovery and collaboration through rich media, announced today that the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, The Journal of Nutrition and Pediatrics have become inaugural users of its commercial synchronized video (SciveeCast) service. SciveeCasts are a family of products, including PubCast (for peer-review articles), PaperCast (for non-peer review articles) and PosterCast (for posters and conference materials). SciVee recently announced its strategy to commercialize its SciveeCast offering, and these journals are among the first to supplement their online articles to increase views, expand audience and create greater interest.

American Journal of Preventive Medicine, published by Elsevier, has started with a PubcastTM complementing their peer reviewed May, 2009 article “Translating Physical Activity Recommendations into a Pedometer-Based Step Goal: 3000 Steps in 30 Minutes”. The PubCast is used to emphasize the conclusions in the article relating to the use of a pedometer in healthful exercise and the importance of a minimum pace for walking described in the article. AJPM’s first PubCast can be found in the AJPM Channel featured on SciVee’s website (http://www.scivee.tv/journalnode/12819).

“Video and the collaborative web is becoming an integral component of a journal’s online presence as our readers increasingly expect an interactive multimedia experience,” said Dr. Kevin Patrick, editor-in-chief of AJPM. “SciVee’s offering is cost effective, flexible and easy to implement. We are quite pleased with the significant number of viewings in the short time the pubcast has been posted”, he added.

The Journal of Nutrition begins with a PubCast focused on research related to the impact of iron deficiency on restless leg syndrome, recently published in their November, 2009 issue (http://www.scivee.tv/journalnode/13328 ). Karen King, Publisher and Director of Publications, stated that, “The American Society for Nutrition has been interested in adding video capability to articles published in The Journal of Nutrition (JN) and The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (AJCN). Until the SciVee offering became available, we viewed it as too complicated and expensive. Our authors found the initial experience quite straightforward, and we plan to implement additional SciveeCasts in the near term.”

SciveeCasts allow the author to synchronize their video with their textual material along the video timeline so that the viewer can see and hear discussion of their paper, poster, slides or book and simultaneously read the highlighted text. Compared with text only, they are a more dynamic and engaging medium to disseminate and absorb scientific and scholarly knowledge.

Pediatrics has created a PubCast to highlight a policy position on Pedestrian Safety communicated in their July 27, 2009 issue (http://www.scivee.tv/journalnode/12012 ). “Our Committee on Injury, Violence, and Poison Prevention has recognized that pediatric injury due to pedestrian accidents is rising to epidemic proportions,” states Joseph Puskarz, Senior Managing Editor for the American Academy of Pediatrics. “We wished to accentuate our call to action in the journal through the power of video. We are excited by the early results we have seen using SciVee.”
