Pioneering Advance in Scientific Dissemination

(San Diego) – September 28 - The International Society for Computational Biology (ISCB) and SciVee Inc. announced the release of a series of Postercasts presented at the Intelligent Systems for Molecular Biology (ISMB) conference in Stockholm, Sweden June 29 through July 2, 2009. Combining a video recording of researchers synchronized with highlighted sections of their poster, Postercasts represent a new approach to achieving broader dissemination and a permanent record of science in process.

“ISCB introduced several new Web 2.0 technology tools at this year’s conference,” said Burkhard Rost, ISCB President. “The Postercasts breathe life into poster abstracts by capturing live scientific presentations by the authors doing the research. Ultimately, society members and the community at large stand to gain long-term benefits through the preserved access to these presentations.”

A total of 14 scientist video presentations were captured in sessions that each took 30 minutes or less. Once uploaded, SciVee’s patent-pending technology was used by the presenter to feature parts of the poster as they were discussed. This is done through the web interface and adds a new dimension in providing access to high-quality science. Posters from the conference can be found at the SciVee website at http://www.scivee.tv/node/12025 . Postercasts may also be embedded in other websites to enhance visibility.

“Our goal is to simulate as far as possible the poster presentation as if the viewer was actually in attendance,” said Phil Bourne, co-founder of SciVee and former president of ISCB. “Based on the positive response from both researchers and viewers, we expect to see the use of Postercasts adopted at future meetings.”

About ISCB

The International Society for Computational Biology (ISCB) is a scholarly society dedicated to advancing the scientific understanding of living systems through computation. Founded in 1997, the ISCB today serves a global membership of more than 2500 scientists in over 70 countries with the goal of an increased understanding of the significance of bioinformatics in the scientific community, governments around the world, and the public at large.
