The kickoff event of the "JGI Science at the Lesher" series featured a panel consisting of Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI) CEO Jay Keasling, DOE Joint Genome Institute Deputy Director Jim Bristow, and DOE JGI Staff Scientist Susannah Tringe, who are developing ways to convert the solar energy stored in plants into liquid transportation fuels.

The panel was moderated by KTVU Channel 2 Health and Science Editor John Fowler moderated a panel consisting of The event took place at the Lesher Center for the Arts in Walnut Creek, California on January 18, 2011.
