Parks do not only function as an opportunity for residents to enjoy themselves and nature, but as a social mechanism that stabilizes society. By interacting with each other positively in a relaxed and safe environment, a sense of community is reinforced within the citizen. Certain areas within the park increase social interaction among visitors. So then, what designs affect citizens’ interactions with each other? By researching different designs of areas inside parks, we can shed light on what elements positively encourage the social interaction of visitors. By analyzing the designs of three different parks in the city of San Diego, as well as interviewing local experts and residents, this research provides examples of successful, user-interaction-friendly design strategies of how to best plan for an increased social experience in local parks. Also, the planning process is investigated in order to out find where the elements of social interaction fit into park planning and how to better implement them.
