Azim Surani obtained his PhD in Mammalian Development at the University of Cambridge. He is the Marshall-Walton Professor at the Wellcome Trust/Cancer Research UK Gurdon Institute, University of Cambridge, since 1991, and a Professorial Fellow of King's College, Cambridge. He is an Associate Fellow of the Third World Academy of Sciences (1992), Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences (2001), a Member of EMBO (1993), and of Academia Europea (1994). He was appointed the Sir Dorabji Tata Distinguished Visiting Professor at the NCBS Institute, and as the Distinguished Fellow of the Nehru Institute in Bangalore (2005). His awards include the Gabor medal by the Royal Society in 2001 and the Rosenstiel award for biomedical research in 2007. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1990.
