A community is set up for members who share a common interest in a topic or event and can communicate and collaborate among each other within it.

If a community creator chooses to make it private, you need to request an invitation to join. There are 4 different privacy settings for communities.

• Open—accepted immediately
• Moderated—to be approved by admin
• Invited—by admin to specific individuals
• Closed—to be invited by admin exclusively

The difference between a community and a channel is that a community is topic-centric and a channel is customer/institution-centric. A video or SciVeeCast in a channel may be relevant to several communities and may be assigned accordingly by the author, for example.
