Apicomplexan Parasites, Pathogen Genome Informatics, and the Evolution of Eukaryotic Organelles: Part 3A: Designing and mining pathogen genome databases: From genes to drugs and vaccines (20:04)

submitted by: video_collector
With the emergence of genomic-scale datasets representing all of the genes in the genome, all of the proteins in a cell or tissue, and all of the interactions and signals in an organism, biologists are increasingly faced with the challenge of how to store, integrate, and interrogate this information. How can we effectively mine large-scale datasets to expedite biological discovery, for example in the identification of new targets for anti-parasitic drug and vaccine design? Computational...

Community Organizing for Equitable Redevelopment: The Barrio Logan and San Ysidro Struggle

submitted by: d4gonzal
Before gentrification was used to revitalize inner-city neighborhoods, the federal government destroyed and rebuilt to address blight, causing extreme displacement. Extensive criticism of ‘urban renewal’, a U.S. program of land redevelopment in urban areas involving the destruction of slum housing, businesses, the relocation of people, and the use of eminent domain, transformed that program into an ‘urban revitalization’ process following two themes: historic preservation and a...

City Heights: The Gentrification & Displacement of Vulnerable Populations

submitted by: pmhuynh
Urban redevelopment has been the “new” strategy to bring re-investments within cities. However, this has caused great concern for many because redevelopment can also lead to the gentrification of “blighted” communities and the displacement of low-income residents, many of which are minorities of color. By focusing on the impacts of redevelopment on the residents of City Heights, a community within San Diego, this case study seeks to identify signs of gentrification and displacement.
