The reasons that people give up their compulsive use of drugs vary, but they almost always include survival. The video explains the role of memory bumps, the brain's stop and go switches using an allergy as an analogy to explain substance abuse.

Welcome to Next-Generation Sequencing 2008 Conference

submitted by: dougramsey
Calit2's Center for Algorithmic and Systems Biology (CASB) recently hosted the UC San Diego Next-Generation Sequencing and Informatics Symposium. The Nov. 9-10 meeting provided an introduction to next-generation sequencing techniques, along with reports on the latest data analysis algorithms and tools. The first day focused on resequencing and de novo sequencing, and the algorithmic developments that are driving the increase in data quality and volume in this field. On day two, the focus...

Gut Feelings: The Intelligence of the Unconscious

submitted by: dougramsey
We think of intelligence as a deliberate, conscious activity guided by the laws of logic. Yet much of our mental life is unconscious, based on processes alien to logic: gut feelings, or intuitions. I argue that intuition is more than impulse and caprice; it has its own rationale. This can be described by fast and frugal heuristics, which exploit evolved abilities in our brain. Heuristics ignore information and try to focus on the few important reasons. More information, more time, even more...
