Viewing Ensembl Regulation & ENCODE Using the Matrix

submitted by: gspudich
This tutorial demonstrates how to view sequences potentially involved in gene regulation. These sequences are analysed by Ensembl Regulation based mostly on ENCODE data, along with Roadmap Epigenomics data for human. The end of this tutorial shows how to add the full ENCODE data set to a genome display in Ensembl. The Region in Detail in the Ensembl browser will be explored. biosights: March 18, 2013 - Breaking egg symmetry

submitted by: JCB
During the first meiotic division of mammalian oocytes, the meiotic spindle and chromosomes move from the interior to the periphery of the cell. Yi et al. reveal that chromosome migration occurs in two sequential phases driven by the actin nucleators Fmn2 and the Arp2/3 complex. This biosights episode presents the paper by Yi et al. from the March 4, 2013, issue of The Journal of Cell Biology and includes an interview with senior author Rong Li (Stowers Institute for Medical Research, Kansas...

Beneficial effects of a higher-protein breakfast on the appetitive, hormonal, and neural signals controlling energy intake regulation in overweight/obese, “breakfast-skipping,” late-adolescent girls

submitted by: hurstn
Background: Breakfast skipping is a common dietary habit practiced among adolescents and is strongly associated with obesity. Objective: The objective was to examine whether a high-protein (HP) compared with a normal-protein (NP) breakfast leads to daily improvements in appetite, satiety, food motivation and reward, and evening snacking in overweight or obese breakfast-skipping girls. Design: A randomized crossover design was incorporated in which 20 girls [mean 6 SEM age: 19 6 1 y;...

MWV Episode 68 - Threading the NEIDL: TWiV Goes Inside a BSL-4

submitted by: MicrobeWorld
Constructed in 2009 in the highly populated South End neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts, the National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories (NEIDL) facility contains labs that operate at biosafety levels 2, 3 and 4. Due to its location the NEIDL has faced a raft of legal and regulatory hurdles that have prevented BSL-3 and BSL-4 labs from becoming functional. "Threading the NEIDL," is a 1-hour documentary narrated by Vincent Racaniello, PhD, Higgins Professor of Microbiology &...
