Fruit, Mediterranean-style, and high-fat and -sugar diets are associated with the risk of night sweats and hot flushes in midlife

submitted by: gcmherber
Background: Diet has been suggested to be a potential risk factor for vasomotor menopausal symptoms (VMS), i.e. hot flushes and night sweats. Objective: We investigated the associations between dietary patterns and risk of VMS using data from mid-aged women born between 1946 and 1951 in the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women’s Health. Design: A prospective cohort study of 6,040 women with a natural menopause, who were followed up at three-year intervals over nine years. Dietary...

biosights: April 15, 2013 - Frog oocytes evade the checkpoint

submitted by: JCB
Most dividing cells possess a spindle assembly checkpoint that prevents them from entering anaphase until all their chromosomes are correctly attached to the metaphase spindle. Shao et al. reveal that Xenopus eggs lack this checkpoint, allowing them to undergo meiosis in the absence of microtubules or in the presence of monopolar spindles. This biosights episode presents the paper by Shao et al. from the April 15, 2013 issue of The Journal of Cell Biology and includes an interview with...

Richard Cogdell - Bacterial Photosynthesis (MWV 069)

submitted by: MicrobeWorld
Richard Cogdell is the Director of the Institute for Molecular Cell and Systems Biology at the University of Glasglow, Scotland. Richard was led to a career in studying bacterial photosynthesis by a desire to learn and understand basic photosynthesis, he "wanted to know how natured worked." In 1995, Richard's research group, in collaboration with others, used protein crystallography to determine the three dimensional structure of a light-harvesting complex from the purple bacterium,...

Viewing Ensembl Regulation & ENCODE Using the Matrix

submitted by: gspudich
This tutorial demonstrates how to view sequences potentially involved in gene regulation. These sequences are analysed by Ensembl Regulation based mostly on ENCODE data, along with Roadmap Epigenomics data for human. The end of this tutorial shows how to add the full ENCODE data set to a genome display in Ensembl. The Region in Detail in the Ensembl browser will be explored.
