Epidemiology of association between maternal periodontal disease & adverse pregnancy outcomes – systematic review

submitted by: Mark Ide
Aim: The aim of this systemic review was to evaluate epidemiologic data on the association between maternal periodontal disease and adverse pregnancy outcomes, namely preterm delivery, low birth weight / small for gestational age, preeclampsia and combinations of preterm and low birth weight. Methods: MEDLINE, EMBASE and Cochrane Central Registers were searched up to and including May 2012, supplemented by a broad hand search of relevant journals and online early peer-reviewed papers....

Abstract

biosights: January 21, 2013 - How cell shape changes unfold

submitted by: JCB
Under certain conditions, cells form protrusions that oscillate rapidly around the cell periphery. Kapustina et al. reveal that these oscillatory protrusions, which may be related to processes involved in amoeboid cell migration, are driven by the cyclic folding and unfolding of the plasma membrane and its underlying actin cortex. This biosights episode presents the paper by Kapustina et al. from the January 7, 2013, issue of The Journal of Cell Biology and includes an interview with lead...

Endothelin-1 is a transcriptional target of p53 in epidermal keratinocytes and regulates UV induced melanocyte homeostasis

submitted by: arup.indra
Keratinocytes contribute to melanocyte activity by influencing their microenvironment, in part, through secretion of paracrine factors. Here we discovered that p53 directly regulates Edn1 expression in epidermal keratinocytes and controls UV-induced melanocyte homeostasis. Selective ablation of EDN1 in murine epidermis (EDN1ep-/-) does not alter melanocyte homeostasis in newborn skin but decreases dermal melanocytes in adult skin. Results showed that keratinocytic EDN1 in a non-cell...
